Actress Regina King is currently mourning the loss of her son Ian Alexander Jr. The Oscar-winner released a statement confirming her son’s death (via People Magazine). “Our family is devastated at the deepest level by the loss of Ian,” King said in her statement. “He is such a bright light who cared so deeply about the happiness of others. Our family asks for respectful consideration during this private time. Thank you.”

Alexander was King’s only child, whom she shared with her ex-husband, record producer Ian Alexander Sr. The Los Angeles County Coroner officially ruled Alexander’s death a suicide. His death came just days after he celebrated his 26th birthday. Alexander was a DJ, who followed in the footsteps of his father by breaking into the music business. Although King has enjoyed a very successful career, she previously said that her son is what she was the most proud of. “You don’t know what unconditional love is. You may say you do, but if you don’t have a child, you don’t know what that is,” King said of her son in 2007. “When you experience it, it’s the most fulfilling [thing] ever.” This week, King’s close friend and fellow actress, Vivica A. Fox, gave fans an update about how she’s doing following her son’s tragic death.
